Definitions of personality terms:

Cuddler   These are the super sweet, very trusting, rarely raise a quill or ball up, and are the social butterflies with the top notch friendliest personalities. Lovebugs that like being held and cuddled. These are the ones you see on social media being bragged about and shown off. The ones everyone wants.

Adventurous   Super active, bordering on hyper. Always wants to explore. These hedgehogs are sweet and have no issues with being interactive AFTER they get their zoomies out with some exploration to burn off their abundance of energy and curiosity. They do not like to ball up or sit still, but do not mind being picked-up or held. Typically have friendly, outgoing personalities.

Comedian   These are extremely friendly hedgies that comical personalities, sometimes bordering on clumsy, but without the hyperactive of the adventurers. They are interactive after the typical groggy wake up time of an average hedgehog, but the highlight is they are just plain funny. They unball with easily, don’t mind being held, are gentle and social. Their comical personality traits that will keep you laughing.

Average   These are your typical hedgehogs behaving like a hedgehog. They wake up acting as if they need a cup of coffee before they deal with the world. After they are given time to wake up, they are friendly, quickly unballs when picked up, and are in a good mood most of the time.

Independent   These hedgehogs are friendly, not shy but not fond of being picked up and seem a bit stressed when held. They like independent exploration. They enjoy human interaction in the form of verbal communication. They can be quite comical with their facial reactions and head tilts when being talked to. If you are looking for interactive but not fond of the feeling of their quills, this personality may be for you.

Improving   These hedgehogs are slightly shy but showing potential for improvement. These hedgehogs require a little extra time to un-ball, may huff and puff or pop and click, may unexpectedly dart or attempt to run when being held, and may unexpectedly ball up when reacting to movement, loud noises, or at times when being moved around. Although jumpy, they will build trust quickly with continued attention from their human. But be prepared as they may regress and may need to rebuild trust with each new person, animal, surrounding they come in contact with. Though they start off shy, owners often find bonding to be most rewarding with these hedgies.

Shy   These hedgehogs are nervous and would prefer to keep to themselves. They prefer less physical contact. They can be very noisy, huffing and puffing or making pops and clicks when they are uncomfortable. They take extended time to relax and unball. Once unballed they will unexpectedly dart or attempt to run and will unexpectedly ball up when reacting to movement and noise. These hedgehogs require time and patience, but for the right person, can be the perfect fit.

Grumpy   These hedgehogs does not like interactions. They are not aggressive but not at all social either. They are happiest when left to themselves and do not like being picked up or held. They are known to show their agitation with pops, clicks, jumps, and hissing while staying balled up most of the time..

Unfriendly   These hedgehogs don’t want any interaction. They are generally unfriendly, stay in a ball, may occasionally bite if aggravated or irritated.

TBD   To Be Determined.

Things you should consider before purchasing a hedgehog:

  • Hedgehogs are pokey and can be uncomfortable to handle. It is something you will need to get  used to.

  • Hedgehogs will poop on you, on your stuff, basically they are little poop machines. And no, you cannot train they not to do that.

  • Hedgehogs are nocturnal and no you cannot alter that. They will keep you up at night.

  • Hedgehogs will not seek out your affection and bonding requires time, patience, and persistence on the owners part. They are very independent, solitary animals, whos nature is not to desire or require companionship.

  • Attitudes and personalities are not predictable and may change through the stages of growth and maturing. A good owner is prepared to accept the good and the bad. (Affectionate and friendly personalities often take time to develop and should not be expect from a hedgehog that doesn't know you and hasn't yet learned to trust you.)

  • A hedgehog cannot be trained out of and will not change or deviate from its natural instincts for you or your convenience. They are a prey animal, so they are naturally shy and defensive little creatures. This is the natural instinct that is built in to protect them from predators. But they can be a joy for an owner that understands a hedgehog's true nature and is not deterred by a little huffing and puffing.

We are a USDA licensed breeder in NC. We collaborate with many reputable breeders from around the country to track and verify pedigrees, update lineage, and pass on health information that may be vital to continuing to produce hedgehogs that are free of hereditary disease and issues. All of our breeding hedgehogs are pedigreed and we do not condone the breeding of hedgehogs without a pedigree and knowledgable tracking of verified lineage. As such, we choose to only sell hedgehogs for breeding purposes to reputable USDA breeders or hobby breeders that have a mentor and are an active part of the hedgehog community. We offer the same health warranties & guarantees as most ethical breeders and require a similar application process in order to protect our animals from buyers that are unprepared to provide proper care and homes. We belong to several breeder associations and groups so that we can connect with other breeders, rescues, and hedgehog enthusiast. We are happy to refer you to other breeders or veterinarians in your area and provide you with additional resources to further your own hedgehog knowledge such as the pdf available below of "Pet African Hedgehogs:  A Complete Guide to Care." This book is written by Kimberly Goertzen, a highly experienced hedgehog owner and breeder that has spent years researching and developing products to support the health and well being of pet hedgehogs. We do not recommend Facebook groups or YouTube as an education source. The majority of information found on these type of platforms is based on options, not facts. It can be unreliable and occasionally harmful. Please refer to reliable information sources like the book listed or http://blog.critterconnection.cc
